White teacher in a diverse classroom

This post, from the Wabash Center at Wabash College, highlights the dangers of white faculty trying too hard to demonstrate understanding, rather than actually trying to understand, when students of color speak from personal experience in class. 

The Wabash Center @thewabashnation is a good resource on pedagogy for all disciplines, although its focus is on teaching religion and theology. 

“Can I tell you something?” Chuck asked. “When African American students in your class speak from their experience, you almost always follow up by explaining why you understand what they’re talking about.”
