First gen college, first gen American

Here’s a cross-post from Class Action, on the important issue of social mobility and first-generation college students.  Vivianna Lee Alvarez talks about negotiating the various aspects of her position as a first-gen student whose parents emigrated from China and Mexico. Alvarez went through a lot of transitions during her undergraduate days, and she’s looking to help other students like herself — she wants to pursue a career in student affairs.

Keep an eye out for your first-gen students.  They may not be operating from the same assumptions as other students: may not know that they should come to your office hours, may not know that there’s a financial cost to waiting to drop a course, may not know that it’s important to check in with you if they miss a class.  Does your campus have an office geared toward helping first-generation students adjust to college? Find out.
