October 3rd event

note: The Oct. 3 event registration is now closed. We are at capacity.

In May, a group of graduate deans from Massachusetts doctoral institutions met at Bridgewater State University with representatives from the regional comprehensives, community colleges, and liberal arts colleges, to talk about setting up a structure for helping doctoral students, postdocs, and adjunct instructors to become better prepared for teaching at teaching-intensive institutions like ours.

We decided to aim for something like a certificate program, involving an online course, a series of workshops, shadowing opportunities, and teaching opportunities, along with mentoring.  While we are building that program, we are starting with a day-long symposium, on October 3rd, called Teaching at Teaching-Intensive Institutions.  The program will feature workshops on such topics as “Who are the Students at Regional Comprehensives?”, “Teaching/Research and Work/Life Balance at a Teaching-Intensive,”  and “Everything You Need to Know about Community Colleges,” among others.  We will also offer job counseling, where folks can bring a CV and cover letter and get feedback from faculty who serve on search committees.  As we get closer to the date, we will post the schedule for the day here.

The event will be held at the Best Western Royal Plaza in Marlboro, Mass., from 9 am until 3:30.  Please RSVP to pkrebs@bridgew.edu.  The event, including refreshments, will be free to all attendees, thanks to our sponsors:
